The driver of a car that struck and killed a jogger Monday morning was an off-duty Mountain Brook police officer, authorities confirmed today.
The officer, who has been on the force since 2005, had just gotten off work when the accident happened just after 6 a.m. on Montevallo Road.
“The vehicle was driven by an off-duty officer with our city,” Mountain Brook Acting Police chief Greg Hagood said. “He also called the accident in to our dispatcher.”
The officer, whose name hasn’t been released, has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an ongoing investigation, Hagood said.
Sundeep Caplash, a 38-year-old father and husband, was struck from behind while he and a friend were jogging, as they usually did several mornings a week.
Caplash was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
